Havells “LED” the way!

January 2, 2010

Hi everybody!

Today I have some great news for you guys! Havells India has announced the global launch of LED lightings, thereby entering the Light-emitting-Diodes (LED) Market. Its new LED product range called “Endura” includes spotlights, down lights, commercial lights and street lights. So the basic question that arises is ‘What is LED?

A light emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when electrical current passes through it. They are basically tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. LEDs are increasingly used for lighting.

Now you all will want to know why you should use LEDs.

The answer is simple. They are:

  • Low power consumption – energy saving, as they consume 80 percent less energy compared to traditional sources and are four times more energy efficient than regular incandescent lamps. You can save money & energy by using LEDs.

  • Long lasting-The rated average working life of LED is 50,000 – 100,000 hours compared with 1,000 hours of incandescent bulbs. Additionally, their small plastic bulb makes them a lot more durable.

  • Cool lighting, In contrast to most light sources, LEDs radiate very little heat in the form of Infrared Radiation that can cause damage to sensitive objects or fabrics. Wasted energy is dispersed as heat through the base of the LED.

  • Ruggedness- They don’t have a filament that burns out, unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs. They generate very small amount of heat which makes them much safer in terms of danger of fire.

  • Small size and weight– LEDs can be very small (smaller than 2 mm) and are easily populated onto printed circuit boards.

  • Fast switch times- LEDs light up very quickly. LEDs used in communications devices can have even faster response times.

  • Shock resistant– being solid state components, they are difficult to damage with external shock, unlike fluorescent and incandescent bulbs which are fragile.

  • Toxicity- LEDs are also non-toxic (as they do not contain mercury) and therefore are more environmental friendly.

In continuation of its drive towards developing energy efficient products, Havells has put a Lighting Design Centre & Energy Management Cell at Noida. The centre would advise as to how a unit can reduce its energy bill without cutting down on light required.

You know how our CFLs help you save on energy, your bill and also stay eco-friendly, our fan that is rated by BEE – The ES-50 for less energy consumption and now you have LEDs that have so many benefits like I have explained above. But if you still do have queries, ask me by commenting here.

You have to love Havells for making your life so easy, yet again!

Until next post,

Elex – Your electricity expert!

    Dear Sir,

Thank you for the detail clearance given about LED.

Here with I come across queries from customer like how can we replace existing SV/MH Street lighting with LED Street lighting.

We know Lumen output level of SV/MH is very high and fitted at the height of 8 meters to 10 meters with spacing of 20 t0 30 meters. How will we manage the lux level? Also, how to convince customer with economic pack back period?

    Will you support…

    Regards

      Dear Mr. Vijay,

We can replace HPSV street lights with LED streetlight considering not only the total flux but also color characteristics of the LED and CRI. In general, HPSV lamp CRI is very poor. LED CRI is three times to HPSV. Small amount of lumens is sufficient to replace. And the pole spacing and uniformity of the LED street light will depend upon the optics used for the LED and orientation of the LED. Optics increase the pole spacing and uniformity. We can go ahead in market with a lot of excellent features of the LED.

      Dear Mr. Vijaykumar,

It is helpful to compare usage of LED Streetlights (vis a vis HPSV) with reference to a specific Road Project to be lit up.
We can assist you in designing and forming an appropriate response in terms of payback period etc. for any of your specific street lighting requirement.
You can provide me with your contact number & email id to communicate further on this subject.

      regards,
