The Havells Journey

September 30, 2009
Hey everybody! This is Elex – Your Electricity Expert, the one you can see in the Blog header. That’s me. I’m going to be speaking to you through this blog. And remember: this is a dialogue, so do tell us what you think, in the comments. In this first post, let me tell you about the Havells journey.
Some quick Havells trivia:
1958: Launched with an investment of Rs. 10,000, as a small trading business
1990: Now as a manufacturer of switchgear, revenues hit Rs. 30 Crore
2009: With a turnover of Rs. 5400 Crore, is among the top three in every category
Our Chairman Mr. Qimat Rai Gupta’s story begins in the year 1958. He was a teacher until then. In 1958 he started off as a small trader in cables, a business into which he invested his entire savings.
In 1971, he purchased the Havells brand and moved from being a trader to a manufacturer of switchgear. Since then, Havells has crossed a lot of milestones. Today, Havells not only manufactures switchgear, but also Cables and Wires, Motors, Fans, Power Capacitors, CFL Lamps, Luminaires for Domestic, Commercial & Industrial applications, Modular Switches, & Bathfittings and much more! This is the widest range of products by any competing company in any category, something which we are extremely proud of.
Another fact which makes us very proud is our pro-activity when it comes to matters related to the environment. In March 2009, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) – an organization that rates companies based on what kind of energy savings they enable, has awarded to Havells India’s first 5 star rating for its Velocity ES-50 1200 mm fans.
Today, the company is well recognized globally. In fact, Havells is a company which matches and surpasses global standards in all of the categories under which it operates. It regularly sets standards for other organizations to match.
In March 2007, Havells acquired SLI Sylvania of Netherlands for $300 Million, making it the fourth largest lighting business in the world, worth over a billion USD! This was, at the time, the biggest overseas takeover by an Indian Electrical equipment manufacturer. This takeover helped take the Havells brand to over 10,000 dealers across Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. A proud feather in the Havells cap indeed.
Havells continues to remain a trendsetter in this and other matters. In this short video, Ms. Josephine Price, Dy. CEO of Capital Partners ventures a guess at the reason for Havells success. She says that the depth and length of the Chairman’s experience, combined with the dual qualities of thoughtfulness and professionalism have lead to Havells extraordinary success.
Just as it does for me, I am sure this story of Qimat Rai Gupta and Havells will continue to inspire Indians for generations to come.
