A “Bulb” on the move

December 1, 2009

Hi everybody!

Last time, I told you how to save energy at your workplace. I hope that you aren’t still being a “Bulb” in your office. Today in this post I am going to advise you on how to save energy while on road. Seeing the ample wastage of our scarce resources, I deeply felt the need to write to you about this.

So my friend, do you think you are an active participant in conserving energy while travelling? Sadly, the answer is ‘No’. Let me narrate an incident that will help you realize our indifference towards saving energy. Today I was in a hurry as I was a bit late for office. I had to rush to catch my bus as I couldn’t afford to miss it. As I headed towards the highway I noticed at the signal that there were 2 minutes for the light to turn green and so many people had their vehicle’s engine on!!! This actually is sad as we are wasting energy by keeping the engine on when not needed. This incident signifies that we are not doing much to save our scarce resources! Even the emissions due to this ignorance cause so much of trouble to the environment.

I am sure none of you wants to be a “Bulb“. So lets see how you can avoid being a bulb by saving energy while travelling. Following tips can help you:

  • If you stop for more than 30 seconds turn off your car engine because restarting uses less petrol.
  • When buying a new vehicle, buy an energy-efficient one by comparing the energy requirement/consumption of various models.
  • Plan and combine your errands such that they are accomplished on the same trip.
  • Keep your car windows open instead of the air conditioner in more moderate weather.
  • Driving fast wastes precious fossil fuel as well as time and money at the petrol pump.  So reducing your speed is one of the simplest ways to save energy on the road.
  • Ensure your vehicle’s air conditioner is serviced by a certified technician who recaptures the CFC and recycles it instead of letting it loose into the air as CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) are mainly responsible for ozone layer depletion.
  • Park the car in a shady spot in hot weather so as to keep the air conditioner cool.
  • Accelerate and apply the brakes of your vehicle gently as quick starts and stops can decrease mileage up to 12 percent.
  • Use alternative forms of transportation like public transportation, bike or walk.
  • Old, dirty oil and clogged filters rob your engine of energy efficiency and increase air pollution. So ensure that your car is properly tuned, spark plugs are firing right and the oil and air filters are clean.

I hope after going through these tips you will make conscious efforts to conserve our precious energy by not only implementing them but also spreading the message among others and help them to avoid being a ‘Bulb’.

Greetings,

Elex- Your electricity expert!

Rather interesting site you’ve got here. Thank you for it. I like such themes and everything that is connected to them. I would like to read a bit more on that blog soon.
